“How He Loves” – David Crowder*Band

For my first Worship Files entry, I chose “How He Loves” by David Crowder Band. Actually, the original artist is John Mark McMillan, it was made popular by Kim Walker, then was recently redone by David Crowder. I’ve never heard the McMillan version and I can’t sing like a girl (well, let’s just say you don’t want to hear that), so I stuck with the Crowder version. Also, Crowder changes a key lyric in the 2nd verse that makes the song a bit more congregation-friendly. I’m kinda weird so I actually might prefer the original, but when he sings “when heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss” he’s changing from the original that says “when heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss.”

I originally heard this done by the Stillpoint Band with Charis singing it and let me tell you, that chick is anointed! I was completely drawn into worship by the lyrics, the dynamics of the song, and by her incredible voice.

This week’s “Crazy Love” book study at Origins was on chapter three which is actually entitled “Crazy Love.” I was deeply impacted by taking a step back and looking at God as Father and basking in His love. I thought it appropriate, especially given this upcoming Sunday’s message, to sing about this great love. We’ll be doing this song on Sunday morning, so if you’re an Origins-goer, give this a listen and come ready to worship!

  1. Dude, the John Mark McMillan version is amazing: http://tinyurl.com/howheloves. Also, if you haven’t seen it, look up “cardboard testimonies” on YouTube — it should be the first one.

JMM actually has some pretty good music, and his wife, Sarah McMillan, is really good, too.

  2. Jason-

This song is amazing! I actually heard it for the first time in May when Brandon sent me a link to the song. We were trying to figure out what the words Crowder changed were.. We kept listening, but couldn’t figure it out, now I know. :) Props to you for singing this so well man! Miss ya’ll!

  3. Not a bad first entry. Amazing song. We are doing it at our first service this Sunday. I’m crossing the Crowder and Walker version and doing it in the key of G (I can’t sing it up in C like you good singers!). Good stuff.

  4. Hey buddy, Nice site!

  5. Misty, thanks for the link…he’s got an interesting voice, kind of just matter-of-fact…I like it!

Chris, for the record, I quite liked your voice. Regardless, the good news is that it’s not about our voices, but about the Holy Spirit moving and us worshiping!

  6. Nice blog Jason… I stumbled upon it from Facebook, and little did I know I would be referenced in your post! :) . Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words… I hope Origins realizes how blessed they are to get you and Beth… We miss you guys!

  7. Jason this is Lynn, Beth’s friend in Fl. What an awesome site. We’re trying to put together a band for children’s ministry and youth and I just forwarded your site to the youth pastor. Origins will surely be blessed with both of you (and Jude)

  8. This song gives me chills every time i hear it. I am a new guitar player looking for some pointers. First im trying to get the strumming pattern down on this.. I believe it’s Down- Up- Up… but i just cant seem to get it. If you can help me with that it would be greatly appreciated. God Bless You Bro!!

    • I’ve never known how to describe strumming patterns, so I’m not sure if I can help. What you need to keep in mind for finding your own rhythm on this one is that it’s in a 3/4 time signature so the standard 4/4 stuff probably won’t work.

  9. I am 11 and I am going to sing this at my Grandma’s church and I need to practice it in the instrumental version so does anyon know where I can get it online free?

  10. so i was flipping through sites and i just happened to stumble across yours, i watched your video and i was wondering if you knew the strumming pattern, no matter how hard i try i cannot match yours, but your very tallented i hope to see what else you post in the future.

    • hey dude, i like the style you play this song, right now i´m trying to play it, but i don´t know how to play the intro, could you give me a hand please? do you have a video showing how to play it?

  11. Thanks for this! very well done!

  12. Thats for the info. I’m a guy who has a major stroke, and God is on my side!
Heck, I may even play it. A great song! Thanks

  13. wow this is great! you have a God given talent! Keep on praising and don’t stop!

  14. Hey Jason, great job man! I’ve never seen the chords done like that before. I’d really like to give it a whirl. I can tell what chords you’re doing, but what do I do from that position? (moving fingers to different strings/frets ect?)

  15. Hey Jason, so Im new to playing guitar and Im teaching myself. I want to learn to play this song but I need help with strumming. What pattern do I use or how do i find a rhythm?

    • I don’t really know how to teach strumming patterns so the best I can tell you is to point out what might have already been known – that this song is in 3/4 (6/8) time signature.
