“Overwhelm Me” – Michael Bleecker

I recently wrote about and covered a Michael Bleecker song called Here I Am. Bleecker is the worship leader at The Village in Dallas and even though I mentioned it before, I want to reiterate how much I love this church and what they’re about. The pastor, Matt Chandler, is someone who you should definitely podcast and Bleecker is a great song writer who should be coming out with a new album soon (hopefully).

Overwhelm Me is my favorite song of his. I’ve been using it in leading worship since I heard it for the first time many years ago. It is a passionate plea with God to take us out of the place that we’re in and move our hearts toward Him. Though we may know that He is the giver of life and joy, we so often ignore this and pursue other things that we think will fulfill us. Asking God to “overwhelm me” and “shake the ground I stand on” can be dangerous since it sometimes means that to get our attention He really does have to shake up our entire world. However, in the end, it is essential. His way is best. His love is greatest. We’ll be singing this song after the sermon on Sunday and I am praying that we are all able to divein to a deep encounter with Christ.

Side note: big improvements on the video quality this time around. The resolution and frame rate are much better, but I still don’t have enough light in the music room so it looks a little grainy. Hopefully I can get that aspect fixed soon.

EDIT: I just found Bleecker himself on Youtube doing this song and apparently he has 2nd verse that I didn’t know about…sweet! We’ll probably just stick to the one, though, since it’s a new song. He also mentions on his video that the song was written from Psalm 51:10-12, 62:7-8 and Mark 7:37. Very good to know…enjoy!

  1. Can’t wait to hear this on Sunday! What a great song!

  2. Great job Jason. Thanks for taking time out to do this every week. I know it’s time consuming and I really appreciate it! :) Great song choice!

  3. This one I will have to learn for sure. Hey, Jason, I love the sound your getting out of your guitar on this song. What are you playing? I kept waiting for the head of your ax to pop into frame but it never did! Also, what is your set-up to record? Are you at your church? What is driving the effects? Just curious, dude. I play a strat piped into a $100 roland processor and then into our sound system. I use wireless earpiece for monitor. I get some pretty good sounds out of that cheap little unit. Let’s just say it is enough to keep these presbyterians nervous!

    • Hey Dirk, thanks for stopping by the site. I use a Taylor 614CE and absolutely love it. It’s one of the old school versions before they came up with the new electronic system and I like mine much better than the new ones. To record I’m just running into a mixer and going from the tape out into the microphone input of my Mac. Nothing fancy, but I do have a nice DI box – Countryman DT85. I also put some slight compression on it and my vocals. As far as where I’m at, just chilling in my music room.
